Splice Kit Cover Branding Supports Efficient Splice Assembly
Belt splicing is a fast-paced, high-pressure industry where every task is urgent and must meet the highest standards of quality.
In such an environment, eliminating guesswork is critical to maintaining efficiency and safety.
A recurring issue faced by both Fenner’s internal belt splicers and external customers was the difficulty in distinguishing between the inner Bonder layer and the outer hard wearing rubber once a splice cover panel was removed from its packaging. These layers are visually similar, making it nearly impossible to identify the correct orientation by appearance alone.
This ambiguity could lead to incorrectly oriented splices, resulting in:
- Unplanned downtime due to rework
- Reduced site efficiency and output
- Increased risk of splice failure if the error went undetected
For a client of ours this challenge raised significant health and safety concerns. Incorrect splicing required additional manual handling, increasing the risk of injury. They approached Fenner Conveyors to develop a solution that would ensure splice orientation was correct the first time, every time.
Fenner Conveyors introduced a simple yet effective innovation: printing orientation instructions directly onto the splice rubber.
A trial was conducted to confirm that direct printing could be scaled for industrial production, would withstand field conditions, and would not compromise material performance
Following successful validation, all cover panels supplied by Fenner now include a bonder layer printed with the instruction “BONDER THIS SIDE”, ensuring clear identification even after packaging is removed.
This printed instruction is now part of Fenner’s quality assurance checks, guaranteeing legibility and consistency across all supplied panels.
This solution has a number of benefits for clients and maintenance operators. By eliminating the need to remove and refit incorrectly oriented panels, manual handling risks and the risk of unexpected splice failure are significantly reduced, while rework costs are eliminated without any increase to the cost of the splice kits.
